How to Increase Metabolism

Believe it or not, simply changing a few daily habits can have a major impact on your metabolism! If you’re trying to lose weight, increasing your metabolic rate can enable you to lose more weight without cutting more calories.

Here are some tips based on research & studies.

What is metabolism? In the simplest terms, metabolic rate is the rate at which your body burns calories. Very few people have a fast metabolism, and overweight individuals generally have slow metabolisms. However, a faster metabolism will enable you to lose more weight than your friend, even if you both have the same activity level, diet, and weight.

Drink iced water. As with food, depriving your body of water can encourage it to “hoard” rather than “burn”. When your drink ice cold water, your body burns calories warming it to body temperature. More than ninety percent of the chemical reactions in your body occur in water, so make sure you drink an appropriate amount of water.

Exercise twice a day if possible. Do your vigorous workout in the morning, and then take a walk after dinner. This way you will continue to burn calories at a higher pace for almost the entire 24 hours.

Boost metabolism in the long run with weight training. Muscle burns more calories than fat does (73 more calories per kilogram per day, to be exact) so the more muscle you build, the higher your resting metabolic rate (RMR) will be. Every muscle cell that you gain is like a little factory that constantly burns calories for you, even while you sleep, and revs up when you exercise. This is the only way to increase RMR, which accounts for 60 to 70 percent of the calories you burn daily.

Eat Proper Meals. Never skip meals for the sake of weight loss. Skipping meals sends a signal to your body to lower the metabolism rate as there are fewer calories to burn. With a lower metabolism rate, your calories won’t burn, which will lead to fat accumulation and weight gain. Eating meals will increase your metabolism, thus preventing fat accumulation.

Time Your Meals. Eat five meals a day. When you eat a meal the metabolism rate is high for about four hours and then is slows down. To increase metabolism you need to eat five meals a day so that it keeps working and burning calories. Increasing metabolism rate also allows you lose weight without going in for a very difficult diet plan. Make sure you eat your meals within four hours of exercise. The metabolism rate in high at that time and thus burns most of the calories thus leading to weight loss.

    and resricted diets are always good for loosing weight.
    However I shall be happy to follow your theory rather than the guru’s.I like good healthy food as well as drinking cold water and I am 88 Kgs.

    It is new for me that cold water increase the metabolism rate. chinies drink warm water to increase the digestion. The cold things slow down the stomic activities. How the cold water increase the metabolism I have to change my mind. May be drinking water when the food is passed away from the stomic it is useful. from engineering point of way the lower temperature of heat sink increase the engine efficiency, similarly in cold weather we feel more hungry as the arte of burning accellarates. Any how it is a good information. No doubt the exercise is useful for burning the food and ofcourse the spliting of mealse in samll segments is also helpful. I add one thing that drinking more water espacilly after meal will reduce weight thoug it is not good for digestion.

    Drinking cold water after food = Cancer…

    I read this in numerous sites. This is because cold water will make the food even more solid making the digestion process difficult. Also, it will lead to accumulation of fats…

    One of my family member had this habit and just recovered from Cancer…so please take this point after further investigation

    well who got time for five meals and cold water freeze oils and fats inside your body where as hot water burn it. Chinese people drink hot water with their meals and the people there are lean and active. Doing exercise twice and weight lifting actually boost your desire for more food so please don’t misguide people. you need to cut down your calories from the daily requirement and need to eat better food without saturated and trans fats.

    The cold water story sounds like an old wives’ tale! Your body does not use energy to warm up cold water. If you drink very cold water, your body’s core temperature may drop very slightly and your body will redirect blood from you limbs and outer extremities to your core to bring the temp up again. If there is any energy burned in the process it will be minimal and you would need to drink like 1000 liters for it to have any effect for weight loss.

    As for not skipping meals – new research indicates that there is nothing wrong with this. In fact many religions have been advocating fasting for thousands of years. It is actually quite healthy to go without food (solids) for a day or longer at a time. Our ancestors did not have fridges and markets, so they could not eat regular meals. They hunted, ate, then maybe went days before another good meal – its called the “feasting and fasting” cycle. It is correct that if you don’t eat, your metabolic rate slows down, but if you are exercising then the slow down is countered by the increased burn of calories through the exercise.

    Best way to lose weight or maintain healthy weight is to think of your body as a “calorie bank”. If you deposit more calories than you withdraw you get fat. If you withdraw more than you deposit you get thin. You deposit calories by eating – watch what you eat. Eat healthy, natural, unrefined food. Avoid sugars, oils and starches in large quantities. You withdraw by eating less, eating healthily and exercising.

    Bullshit!!!?? What kind of theory is that!!! Is it clinically tested???When you drink cold water, the oil in the food will solidify and that will cover the absorption surface of the intestine. This will hinder the smooth operation of the absorption and will slowdown all processes.

    The simple truths are, the heart,as the motor drive of human body, does not grow along with growing amount of flesh, hence, in order to keep the heart at adequate efficiency level for active life of work and enjoyment (including of good and vitamin rich, energy foods) one must not allow fat to accumulate by stepping up metabolism with tablets merely beczc it is easy to consume and digest whatever food intake. Of course, individual constitution has a say in body weight which also is governed by other factors like race and geography. Sedentary jobs, mental work, and hard working conditions enter as major factors to decide what kinds and quantities of food one must choose for consuming so as to increase chances of longevity with productive activities that one is really borne to engage in with best results for self and society in which one works, drawing upon its resources.

    the suggestion about cold water is not convincing. if by drinking cold water one can increase metabolism then can you increase metabolism by staying in cold atmosphere ?
    only eating less calories reduces weight.
    doing physical work or excersises certainly reduces weight.
    taking frequent small meals helps.
